Blue as a Colour- By Artist Pascale Rajek

Blue is everywhere

It’s time for my colour blog and this week, it is BLUE who will be the star. When I started to write about blue, I was on a plane going to Noumea, New Caledonia..

What a better place to speak about blue..

The colour of ocean and sky, blue is perceived as a constant in our lives and the “favourite colour” and has an equal appeal to both men and women.

But which blue.. The range of blues are like the sky is the limit..

There is different shades of blue, subtle changes in meanings from dark to medium to light blues..#

Credits: Eric Aubry, Pierre Alain Pantz

Colour is a catalyst for feelings - the right colours stimulate or relax our senses, release either happy or unhappy memories, reflect how we feel about ourselves and relate to each other.
But first, let’s see the range of blues we have around us.. and the best places to find amazing colours combination and example – that’s my opinion  - is Design Seeds

Names for shades of Blue: azure, baby blue, beryl, cerulean, cobalt, cornflower blue, corporate blue, cyan, indigo, midnight blue, navy, Prussian blue, robin's egg blue, royal, sapphire, sky blue, slate, steel blue… just to name a few

Blue from beyond the seas.. ultramarine (Oltramarino) made from semi-precious stone lapi lazuli*

The meanings of blue are often associated with serenity, calm, spirituality and trustworthy, dependable and committed. But colour symbolism can be strangely contradictory and Blue is no different.
Blue also brings to mind sadness and loneliness for many.

As the collective colour of the spirit, it invokes rest and can cause the body to produce chemicals that are calming. However, not all blues are serene and sedate.

Electric or brilliant blues become dynamic and dramatic -- an engaging colour that expresses exhilaration. Some shades or the overuse of blue may come across as cold or uncaring.

Indigo, a deeper blue, symbolizes a mystical borderland of wisdom, self-mastery, and spiritual realization. While blue is the colour of communication with others, indigo turns the blue inward to increase personal thought, profound insights, and instant understandings.

Yellow as a Colour Workshop 2 - Part 3 By Artist Pascale Rajek

Discovering Yellow as a colour

Two weeks ago, artist Pascale had shown us how to get close personal with the colour of "Yellow". Today, Pascale is continuing with the final Yellow workshop. So are you ready to have a go with this exercise?

Get all your brushes and paints ready and enjoy the journey.

The next post will be "Blue" as a colour. Pascale will again taking us through a wonderful journey to discover Blue as a colour. So please visit us again in two week time.

Emotion painting Workshop 2:

Mixing Yellow, White and Black
Add yellow, white and black on your pallet.

TIPS: The darker colour is added to the lighter colour.
Use a spare clean brush or pipette to add water in the colour. Less is better

Have a spare paper to test the colours before adding to your A4 paper.

Apply yellow on your paper: thick, thin, very thin (watery).

Make some marks on the paper using only yellow.

Creates shapes, lines, movements, dots, etc.

Explore different emotional words: happy, sad, angry, excited, alone, bright, etc.

How did you feel about the thickness of the colour on the paper?
What kind of marks are you making?
What do you like about Yellow?

If you don’t like Yellow, what is it about this colour that you don’t like? The vibrancy, the brightness, the texture...?

Now mix, yellow with white = yellow tinted*

Remember the darker colour is added to the lighter colour and if you can use a different brush.
* Click on Art on Surface

I have left some blank space on my paper to add the new colour. This will allow me to see how the colours are reacting with each other. I would recommend this as it will help you discover more about the colour.

When mixing colour, you need to know when to stop adding yellow into white.
I have collected from a local paint store some paint chip to have some example.

Apply tinted yellow on your paper on top of the yellow. You can either follow the marks or
change them

.

What do you like about tinted Yellow?
If you don’t like Yellow, what about tinted yellow?
How do you feel about the colours together?

Mixing Yellow and black= shaded yellow*
* Click on Art on Surface

Follow the same steps as before.

Take a moment to reflect on your experience with yellow.

How did you feel?
Were you happy? Frustrated?
Was it easy?
What did you learn about yourself?
Did a colour trigger an emotion?
How did you feel about Yellow? Tinted Yellow? Shaded
Yellow? All together?

Yellow as a colour Part 1- by Artist Pascale Rajek, Art on Surface

Yellow as a colour

Yellow on Trend

After a few weeks away in Europe in the cold weather, now coming back to Sydney and a warmer weather is a blessing. With some jet lag and the flu, I often find myself watching TV or reading at 3.00 am in the morning..

I have just bought the latest issue of Grazia and was so pleased to see that Yellow is on the TREND as it will be the up coming colour in fashion, therefore, I will use this example for my  first workshop.

So..

Grazia Magazine

First thing first, let’s talk about colours

It has been known for a long time that colour plays a major role in setting up a particular mood or state of mind. Colours do affect one’s feelings, moods and emotions. Colours are wavelengths of electro-magnetic energy seen through our eyes. The colour we see is the part of the visible spectrum that is reflected back by a certain object.

Colours affect us in different ways:
  • Colour is one of the languages of the soul, just look at inspired or meditative paintings.
  • They influence our mood and emotions. Think about your last holiday.
  • They have their impact on our sense of well-being or uneasiness.
  • Using and avoiding certain colours is a way of self-expression; it sheds light on our personality.
  • Colours affect our way of perception (light colours make a space look big, a high ceiling looks less high when painted in a dark colour)
  • Colours have a symbolic meaning which is immediately recognized by our subconsciousness. It must be said that not all colours mean the same to all persons and all cultures. I will add that we do have emotions and feelings toward colours because of our life experience, what happened, when it happened, how did it happened and that will be the Pandora box of this particular colour. We associate our memories with the colours, the smells, the textures that surrounded us.
  • They influence the flow and amount of energy in our bodies.
  • Colours tell something about biological attraction and sexual availability. Think about animals.
YELLOW is used in many different situations and can have similar or different meanings for different individuals or cultures.

The following information provided below is for your general information. But please read it with an open mind and open heart, if certain words makes you sad or angry, take a moment to experience it, be aware of it and use it in your emotion painting to release it...

Preference for yellow:
  • The colour of the sun, life-force, vividity, vitality and energy.
  • The colour of cheerfulness, curiosity, alternation, flexibility, progress, amusement, contact through travelling and communication, learning and practical knowledge.
  • A feeling for writing and speaking.
Aversion to yellow:
  • A person who has aversion to yellow may be emotionally disappointed and bitter. May have tendency to rationalize feelings, or to avoid the depth of life by often changing relationships, many superficial relationships and/or constantly changing activities.
After reading this information, take a moment to see how you feel about Yellow and then have a play..

When I started to write this, my mind was able to see Yellow everywhere.. in shops, in food, on the street, people wearing yellow shoes, shirt, pants, yellow cars, flags..

When we are open to have a look at what is around us we discover more about ourselves but also about the world around us.

Happy Yellow Week!! and stay tuned for the first workshop on Yellow in two week time.

Close Up Interview with Colour Artist Pascale Rajek

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.
Born in Noumea, New Caledonia, I moved in Sydney in 2003 to be with my husband.
Being a Graphic Designer for years, I had the desire to draw and paint again and needed to be in touch with the surface and decided to paint with my hand.

My artwork embraces the natural surroundings by creating and integrating the colour, texture, energy and emotion we experience from the land and the people. It is the inter relationships of the environment and human activity that is the focal point of my art making.

Who (or what) inspires you to do what you love in your own creative business?
There are a few artists that I like in terms of the colours they used and also the reason why they started to paint.
Romero Britto is an amazing inspiration for me as his style is bold and joyful.
The other person who has opened the realm of paint for me is a Canadian artist called Kardif. Her use of textures and colours as well as the story I read in her painting gave me the desire to express myself and share my story.

Madoka Vibe- 2012

Where do you get your inspiration from when you design/paint?
I always start with mixing the paint or playing with textures. I try not to have a definite vision of the artwork but let the artwork take me on a journey. Every colour, textures are like words in a book, they are telling a story and the viewer is the one getting the information he needs by looking or reading it.

It is a different approach with commission artwork where I have to connect with the client and what they are trying to tell.

What are the five words that people who know you would use to describe you?
Colourful, Passionate, Creative, Caring, Enthusiastic

Tell us about your very first job and what path have you taken since then?
Looking after kids during school holidays in playground facility.

From then my passion for graphic design, arts and colours as well as holistic medecine has allowed me to connect with children and adults to show them the world of colours and the emotions that comes out of it.

As an Artist, what is your biggest frustration?
Time and space.. I could paint all day

I just finished a course with MoMA (Museum of Modern Art in New York) and tried oils and was frustrated with the smell and the length of time it takes to dry.

Tahitian Dreaming

Tell us about how you prioritise your work.
Painting, drawing, creating is like breathing and I need it to feel alive.. So people need to walk, go overseas but for me it is a piece of paper, canvas and colours that will make me happy.

I consider all of my work a priority, inspiration and creativity are not a switch on button and I need to be in the space to be able to express myself.

How do you connect with other artists, and your customers (i.e. how do you network)?
Once or twice per month, I will visit an Art Gallery to learn more about the artists in Australia and because I am a Pinterest fan, I always find well known artist on the web.

My customers are from facebook, my website and blog as well as referrals.. Hope I will be able to have an exhibition sooner than later to showcase myself.

My Picasso's inspiration

Tell us about your upcoming project with ArtSHINE?
