Have
you ever wondered which social media outlet you should jump on?
Which
one is effective and will benefit your business?
Where
to start one?
What to
do?
How to
engage?
Four
weeks ago we gave you a snapshot on how Facebook works, Youtube, Twitter and last week we talked about Google+ and its advantages and
disadvantages.
This
week we are talking about LinkedIn and how you can leverage this into your
Art and Design business.
LinkedIn has an
audience size of 150 million (Australia 3 M). LinkedIn started as a kind of professional
version of Facebook or "Facebook for Grown Ups". A network community
where you can create your own space that lists your basic CV, and enables you
to network with other like minded people.
Advantages:
LinkedIn
has achieved its credibility as a professional networking tool rather than a
social network tool. It can direct web traffic through the LinkedIn landing
page. Online support such as their posts is readily available to assist in
using LinkedIn effectively such as linkedintellegence.com.
LinkedIn is a great space to show off your credentials and achievements which potential
clients and employers can access.
Disadvantages:
Not many
stats available on site traffic. You need to maintain your account
regularly to maximise its value and potential. LinkedIn emails seem to get
mixed up with Spam mails.
Where to start:
Setting
up a LinkedIn account is free. It works similarly to Facebook. Once your
account is set up you can build your profile and start connecting with the
people you like to connect with. You can also join a particular interest group
or create your own group too.
How to engage:
The
best way to engage with your audience like your clients is to connect with them
first. Share your thoughts on the share and update. Join a like minded
professional group that you can resonate with or you can also create your own
group and invite people to join.
What to do:
To
leverage what LinkedIn has to offer you also need to familiarise yourself
with its key features:
"Connections" - the people who are part of your network and are called
your "connections." A connection on LinkedIn is the same as a
"friend" on Facebook. A connection means that you know the
person well or that they're a trusted business contact. To turn a contact
into a connection you need to send an invitation to that person to join
your network and he /she will need to accept and vice versa. When an
invitation is accepted, both parties are automatically added to each other's
list of connections.
"Recommendations" - like a testimonial where you
can endorse someone you know. Only give
out recommendations to someone who has done something to deserve one. Otherwise
it is a false testimonial that affects not only you but the person you have
recommended.
"Groups" – is to discover the most popular discussions in your professional
groups. You can join a group or groups or even create your own community and
get people to join you on LinkedIn.
"Share & Update" - a section where you post your thoughts or
comments to share with the people you connect with on LinkedIn.
