Different options of earning income as an artist or a designer

There are lots of options to earn income as an artist or amp; designer. Firstly, let’s step outside of the art and designer circle for a few minutes.

Let's look at this example: Just say you really love to travel. What could you do to earn a living out of travelling?

Here are a few things we have come up with:

●Become a flight attendant
● Become a tour guide
● Run a tour guide travel business

From the above, as you can see, these are very different jobs. But they all involve turning a passion for travelling into income. If art or design is your passion and you live and breathe it, then there are many ways to turn your art or design into income too.

For the next 6 weeks we will take you through different options you can do to make money from your art or design. We will discuss each option and what it really means to you and your business lifestyle, so you can make clear decisions on which one or more options would be the right fit for you and your business.

Here is what we're going to cover over the next 6 weeks:
  • What is retailing?
  • What is Wholesaling?
  • What is Consignment?
  • What is Commission?
  • What is Exhibitions?
  • What is Workshop? and
  • What is Art Licensing?
Our goal is to help you decide which one of the six options will fit your goals and lifestyle. We want to help you get started and learn how to be successful so that you too, can earn an income doing what you love.

Want to learn more about different ways of  for making money from your Art & Design?

It’s as simple as 1... 2... 3...

Transition from Full Time to Self Employment:

Are you working full time but not sure for how much longer? Are you wondering how to turn your passion, hobby, or skills into real income? Are you ready to be your own boss but not quite sure where's the best place to start? This is a workshop for those thinking of making a transition from full-time employment to self employment. For some it means opening a restaurant or cafe, for others it's becoming an artist or designer. It could be a move into consulting, or using your skills, knowledge and experience for your own profit and gain rather than for somebody else... But here's the trap, and the danger... One of the biggest issues for most new start businesses is cash flow. How many small businesses are profitable from day one? How long could you survive with little or no income as your business gets off the ground? We're here to show you another way!

As part of a small group in an informal workshop environment you can take the time you need to explore how the cash flows in your business. With real world examples and direct indusrty experience we'll explore the ways your can measure, assess, and create cash flow. This workshop is relevant to all new start, and small business intenders.

Close Up with creative workshop- Frolic In Fabric

Elizabeth Cook
Owner of Frolic in Fabric

Tell us a little about your sewing workshop and your role in the business?
In September 2010 the new Frolic in Fabric Studio opened its doors.  The studio was once a dirty old garage, now transformed into a gorgeous quaint sewing studio.  As the space is relatively small the layout design was crucial for the studio to function efficiently. The studio is divided into two rooms.  The first room is the Shop, display gallery and tea room, and the second is the workshop.  My workshop consists of a long table for at least 4 machines, a large cutting table, narrow book shelving for my ever growing fabric STASH (which reaches the ceiling!).  At this stage I am the owner and sole operator of my business. I am currently teaching learn to sew classes for children and adults as well as designing and making a small range of clothing and home wares for a local shop.

Coffs Harbour

What are the five words that people who know you would use to describe your business?
Inspiring, Fabulous, Vintage, Creative and Exciting.

What was the purpose on starting sewing classes and how has the concept come about?
It was not until the near completion of the studio that I realised how great the space was and that it certainly had the potential to be used for sewing classes!  I also realised that there is a real demand for teaching not only children but adults how to sew.  I have always enjoyed teaching and I love the challenge and satisfaction that it brings.

Workshop Preparation

Who do you cater for in your workshops?
I cater for any person who would like to learn how to sew.  I run school holiday and after school classes for children from ages 5+. I run midweek classes for preschoolers and for children that are home schooled. I have a Monday night ladies social class as well as a structured 6 week “Introduction to Sewing” Course.  I have also run private classes when requested.

Kids Sewing Workshop

Tell us how do you run your workshop?
My workshops are small and intimate as class sizes are no more than 6 people.
Some classes run for a term, others for 6 weeks and one off workshops my only be for 3 hours.

What do the attendees learned by attending your workshop?
What is taught in my workshops depends a lot on the age, skill and knowledge of my students.  For the little ones I always start with learning basic hand sewing stitches and skills before teaching them how to use a sewing machine. Sewing needs to be fun and interesting! (Children are generally aged 9+ before I will teach them how to use a sewing machine).  For adults they are taught all the fundamentals of sewing- The machine, stitches, fabrics, how to use a pattern, etc

What advice can you offer to people who are looking for sewing classes?
Firstly, the person needs to know what they want to get out of the sewing class.  Is it for making clothes for themselves or their children, for making home wares, is it for career purposes or is it for fun or craft purposes?  Once you know this then you it is a matter of finding the right class which will cater for your needs and requirements – a class that will teach you exactly what you want to learn.

Close up Interview with Jen's Kids Art

Tell us a little about Jen’s kids Art and your role in the business?
I run kid’s art classes at the EJ Ward Community Centre, 189 Underwood Street, Paddington. Classes are held Tuesdays 4:15-5:30pm and Saturdays 9:30-10:45am and are for children aged 4-12 years.

I started working for Kirsty Shadiac, the founder of the kids art classes last year under the name “Kirsty’s Kids Art” teaching the Sydney branch for her (Kirsty is based in Adelaide), due to Kirsty’s ever increasing commitments the opportunity came up for me to take over the running of the Sydney Classes and I jumped at the offer...hence the name change to Jen’s kids Art.

I have also started running art themed Birthday Parties either at the centre or in individual homes, so much fun!

 Art Class

What are the five words that people who know you would use to describe your business?
Creative, encouraging, colourful, fun & expressive

What was the purpose on starting Jen’s Kid Art and how has the concept come about?
As I mentioned Kirsty started the business 3 years ago as she had such a love of children and art. I have always had a great rapport with children and had done many art activities with my own nieces and nephews over the years and had been approached to teach through my other business IMOK. So when the opportunity came up to start teaching on a permanent basis I was so excited and just knew that I was destined to do this. My concept is encouraging children to be creative as it helps them to relax and enhances their confidence.

Art Studio

Tell us more about your Art Class and the Art themed birthday Parties?
My classes are held in a wonderful light filled room in Paddington. I teach a maximum of 14 students per class to ensure they get the attention they need. When students arrive they know the first thing they need to do is choose a smock to wear and then gather around my table....for the first 15 minutes I do a demonstration of what we are doing for the class – it is always a different topic or theme and using different materials. Here students get to watch what I am doing, ask questions and suggest what colours I should use. They love this part and helps them relax and come up with ideas for their own artworks, by the time my demo is over they are busting to run to the table and get started.

Students are encouraged to take inspiration from, but not copy my work, the ideas they come up with never fail to amaze and inspire me each week.

My art themed parties are held similar to a class but tailored to suit the birthday girl or boys favourite things to paint or draw. The last few parties I have done have involved creating a penguin pencil case followed by a birthday themed artwork for all of the kids to take home. Lots of fun
Art themed Birthday Party

Tell us about your process for working with children’s’ Art Classes?
Each week I come up with a new topic that either compliments or contrasts previous week topics. I usually will sketch up a few ideas in my sketch book at home and finalise it on the day. I also talk to my kids each week and find out what things they are really interested in learning, for example they were really into origami and paper crafts so I did a few lessons on that. Then Manga followed and how to draw different kinds of eyes.

What do kids learned about attending your workshop?
Kids learn to express themselves through art & creativity. They learn about colour, shapes, famous & not so famous artists and they get the chance to explore different mediums such as oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolour, acrylic paints, textas, pencils and more. I also encourage them to not be afraid to make mistakes and try new things with art. I have had quite a few students for many terms and it is so amazing to see the progression and the personal style they are creating. Just makes me so happy to see them so proud of their work.

What advice can you offer to parents who are looking for Art Classes & Art themed birthday party?
If your child has a love of art then it should definitely be encouraged. I usually ask parents if their child is content to sit at home for an hour and draw or paint etc, if the answer is yes then they are perfect for my class. As my classes are after school and weekends the child needs to have a genuine love and interest in art, just like I do. As children tend to learn set topics at school I try and do different topics that wouldn’t necessarily be taught in school – Manga, Comic Book and Character Design for example and then get feedback from my students. We really have so much fun!

Art themed parties are definitely for parents who are looking for something different from the norm, many parents come to me because there is only so many times you can do a Fairy party. The party is run like a class where each party guest gets to make a craft item and paint a picture to take home. This really keeps the kids engaged and really brings about confidence when they see what they have created. I treat each Birthday Party separatly and usually find out what is the child’s favourite medium – drawing, painting, craft and take it from there.

Do you have a book that you would like to recommend?

Do you have a special offer to the ArtSHINE community?
I am offering 2 for 1 casual drop in class. Usually $30 per child, now $30 for 2.

A casual class is a great way to see if the class is right for your child.
