Do You Feel Successful in Your Art & Design Business?

Do you feel Successful?

As Business Coaches we talk to many artists and designers there’s a common theme we’ve discovered...

We all start out with a dream or an idea. A dream for what we'd like our business to be. An idea for what our lifestyle should become.

So why do some of us feel less successful than others?

And why do we feel less that successful even when we may have already achieved so much?

In our experience working with creative clients like you we’ve found four common reasons why people feel unsuccessful or unfulfilled..

1. Unclear Goals or Objectives:

We work with our clients to get very specific with objectives.

Be very clear on what it is that you want.

Visualise what it is that you’re aiming for. And remember to write your goals in the present tense as if you have already achieved them too.

Understand your DPP (Desire, Passion, and Purpose)

If you haven’t sat down and really planned where you’re going in your business, it’s hard to know when you’ve “got there”.

Many people have vague ideas of what “successful” means to them - ‘being rich’, ‘having time to do what I want’, or ‘being the best in my work'.

You need to define what success means to you and what that success would look and feel like for you too.

It’s this feeling that will empower you to reach your goals.

Think about all the steps you need to take to make your goals a reality. Again, it’s about being specific. What resources will you need, and how will you best use them? Write each action step in sequential order.

If your goal is broad, make sure you break down the task into small little steps, and celebrate them when you attain them.

It’s no fun feeling like you’re not “successful” - That’s why it’s so important to have measurable, realistic, and achievable goals.

3. Your external & Internal  World are not aligned:

Your external world is not aligned with your internal world.

Be grateful for what you have.
It’s always easy to dream, and wish, and focus on all the things we want... all the things that we don’t have right now...

Turn it around: Think about all the wonderful things you have in your life right now...
It’s important everyday to appreciate what you’ve already got.

• Family
• Supportive partner
• Friends
• Beautiful children
• Food on the table etc......

The most important thing is that you are your own boss in all aspects of your life.
It’s about making every part of your life count.
Your life has purpose. And there’s opportunity for joy in everything that you do.

Find Your Desire, Passion & Purpose (DPP) Part 2

PART 2
“Passion and purpose come from your heart and far from your mind.”
”So trust your feeling and instincts”
-Vinh Van Lam

This exercise will assist you clarify and define your top three priorities from your Top 10 list. This exercise will also give you a deeper insight into what you really want, how to bring out your DPP, and how to let it shine.

Please go back and refer to your Part 1 exercise. By now you will have a list of at least 10 or more important things. This process is simple, just follow these easy steps:

1.   Review your list and look at item 1 and 2. Which one would you choose? Practicing this process can also help you make spontaneous decisions in the future.

2.      Ask yourself this question – “If you could only have one, not both, which would I choose?”

3.      If you have difficulty in making a choice, you can also ask yourself this question – “Which without the other would bring me more happiness and harmony?” By asking this question it will help you to prioritise your wants, your needs, and your desires. The answer should become clearer.

4.      If you’re still unsure and don’t know which one to choose. Ask yourself this question - “If I did know which one to choose, which one would I select right now?” Remember trust your instincts and intuitions. In this exercise your first impulse is generally the one to follow.

5.      Be true and honest with yourself when making your choices from the list. Don’t let anyone else cloud your judgement. You choose for yourself, not what other people may think you should be choosing. Finding your DPP is all about you and bringing out the inner you.

6.      Once you have selected your choice between item 1 and item 2 let’s compare the one you selected with the next item on your list (your item 3).

7.      Repeat this same process to choose one of these two over the other going right down your list.

8.      Keep comparing the selected item with the next item on your list until you are left with one final item.

9.      Congratulations! This last item is your first DPP!

1.   Highlight your first DPP and perform the same process again so that you can find your second DPP and then your third… (you can list them on the next page)

Helpful hints:

To stay close to your DPP we suggest you do this exercise every 6 to 12 months. This helps you to fine-tune your inner you, and your desires, passions and purpose. When you are doing the exercise again later you will be astonished about how your choices may change over time.

Find Your Desire, Passion & Purpose (DPP) Part 1

“Know your Desire Passion & Purpose is knowing your desired destination & outcome”
-Vinh Van Lam
·       From history we have learnt that, in any expedition there has to be a desire, the passion and a clear purpose before the journey can begin. At ArtSHINE we refer to the process of discovering and defining this as “DPP”.
·        Finding out your own DPP is a very important step. Let’s examine the following areas:
·         Your needs.
·         Your wants.
·         Your desires.
  • Desires that you’ve kept with you for a long time. Now is the time to acknowledge them and make them a reality. You may have a desire and be have been too afraid to let people around you know, because you think they may laugh at you, or be upset with you, or tell you not to…
  • There are also those desires where you have had to compromise in the past.

·         Your desired destination.
·         Your desired outcome.

·       Remember your DPP is about you and what you want in your life. It’s not about other people. The reason you may not have pursued your DPP in the past is because sometimes we are clouded by other peoples’ points of view. We need to remember that it’s not always about them and that sometimes they don’t understand how important it is that you follow your passion.
·         The only thing that will ultimately stop you from making your DPP into a reality is your fear.
