Close Up Interview with Artist Simon Lovelace

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do. 
My schpeel say's it all…

Simon Lovelace is an English born artist who's prolific output includes painting, photography, screen printing and music production.
Influenced by pop art culture and surreal narrative, his work explores themes of mortality, sexuality and the taboo.

From his studio in the Surry Hills area of Sydney Australia he runs blank_space gallery and the boutique clothing label superficial_moi.

Lovelace exhibits both locally and internationally and his works are in private collections Worldwide.
 
Who (or what) inspires you to do what you love in your own creative business?
I get inspiration from my surroundings, but also from found images. My work has my fingerprints all over it, but doesn't necessarily follow one particular theme.

Where do you get your inspiration from when you design/paint?

The internet proves to be an almost never ending source of inspiration.

What are the five words that people who know you would use to describe you?
Stubborn. Artistic. Loyal. Flirty. Old.

Tell us about your very first job and what path have you taken since then?
My first job was spraying surfboards in a factory. It still amazes me how many techniques i learnt from that job that i apply in my art practice today.

Describe a typical day in your studio space?
Email, coffee, lunch, music, art, music, beer, art.

As an Artist, what is your biggest frustration?
Being overlooked.

Tell us how do you prioritise your  work?
Do the fun stuff, then do the deadline work at the last minute.

Can you please tell us about how do you connect with other artists, and your customers ?
Facebook, email lists & shouting loudly at passers by.

What advice can you offer other creative people who are just starting out and following their passions?

Do whatever the teacher tells you to do to get the grades. It's not worth the fight to try and prove them wrong. Do your own work when there's no one watching.


What dreams do you still want to achieve or fulfill in your life?
Solo exhibitions in NY, London & Berlin.

What is your proudest moment so far?
Selling $60k's worth of commission artwork to an international buyer.

Who do you most want to meet and why?
A wealthy collector or NY gallery curator. Sell, sell, sell!

What is the most important lesson in life that you have learned?
Be yourself.
