Improve your Cashflow in your Art & Design Business

Have you heard the phrase "a starving artist".

Isn’t the notion of the starving artist such a cliche? Yet why does it persist? Why do we have the expectation that artists must "suffer for their art"?

Well, we're here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way.
You can be an artist and also live well!

The first step along that path is to acknowledge that you're actually deserving of living well. Yes. it's something that seems obvious, but you'd be surprised at how many artists and designers that we've worked with start off with a belief that they can't (or shouldn't!) make money for following their passion and doing what they love.

It's been our experience that the subject of finances and "cash flow" is generally low on the list of priorities, if not avoided altogether.

At Quantum Compass we work through a simple "cash flow concepts" formula to help our clients start on the path of increasing their wealth and generating the incomes that they truly deserve for simply doing what they love.

At the start we work with you to get a clear understanding of your current cash flow. Ask yourself these questions: Where is your money going right now? How do you generate income?
Once you have an understanding of what's happening for you right now, you have the perfect opportunity to make some real decisions.

  • Are you happy with the ways you spend your money?
  • Is your income sufficient for your current lifestyle?
  • What will you need to sustain the lifestyle you aspire to?

Moving to the next level is all about having a plan, and increasing the number of ways that your art & design practice can be making you money.

We’re very clear that it's certainly not about "selling-out", or making some crass compromises. Many artists & designers assume that they somehow have to change their art to be successful financially.

In fact, we're very clear that the opposite is true. You don’t necessarily need to change your art; you need to get very clear about who you really are, and find those things that are unique to you and your Wow Factor.

Cash flow is one of the key fundamental elements of a design practice that we focus on during the ArtShine Coaching Program.

Why?

Because financial stress doesn’t usually enhance creativity. We believe it’s critically important for designers & artists like you to understand the power of financial control.

Financially successful designers & artists focus on what you’re good at; your art and creativity.

Successful designers also understand and use “cash flow concepts” to manage finances and leverage the analytical help of advisors like accountants, agents, business coaches, IP advisors, etc as they're needed along the way.

Want to learn more about “Cash Flow” the Quantum Compass way?

It’s as simple as 1... 2... 3...

2: Come along to the next “Cash Flow Concepts for Creative Professionals” workshop. E-mail Quantum Compass: CashFlowConcepts@QuantumCompass.com.au ) for details of the next half day session near you.

The value of a Hobby! -by Marie-nicole

Freshly picked produce

As creative types we often turn our hobby into an income-earning venture. But does this mean we no longer need a hobby?

When I started my photography business it was because I had a passion (and still do) for capturing the beauty of living, but the reality of running that business meant that in order to sustain my micro business I had to work ridiculous hours. When I turned thirty I went through a quarter life crisis as I was working myself into the ground trying to make a living from doing what I loved while supporting a young family, but I somehow never found that right balance between working and living. So I started to feel the strain of how turning your hobby into an income-earning venture could drain the joy out of the activity. Towards the end, photographing became something I did to make money. At that stage in my life I was not wishing to celebrate the so called milestone age as I felt more like a failure than anything else.

At thirty-two I had an awakening. I decided to change the direction of my career, starting on the journey of ‘creating beautiful products for everyday living’ using skills I had learned through my studies, whilst still enjoying the art of photography. For the first time in a long time I decided I wanted to celebrate life, so we invited a bunch of friends around for dinner and a jam session. We did not tell them it was my birthday, this was simply a celebration of life; one should not need an excuse for a good party. The irony of this was that I had not played an instrument since I was in high school. We’ve always had instruments in our home and encourage our children to play or sing. My husband plays the piano and he would often play while we sang along, tapped on a djembé or shook maracas. So here I was asking everyone else to bring along their instruments and musical skills to jam with us. It was a fantastic night… they all worked out the timing lined up with my birthday so they brought presents too.

Very much the learner - and loving it!

Several years have passed since. A couple of years ago a friend picked up a guitar that needed restringing for me at a garage sale. I had mentioned to him I’d been wanting to learn to play for a number of years now, but had not put the time nor effort into doing so, being too caught up in ‘earning an income’ from other passions. So even though my new business venture stimulates and challenges me and has enable me to grow as an artisan, this year I decided that in order to maintain that balance I did not quite achieve in my previous business, I needed a hobby, one that is entirely separate to what I do to earn an income. It allows me to set aside thoughts relating to my business altogether. Even though I am very passionate about what I do, I think it is very important to be able to escape and simply loose yourself in something that nurtures your playful side, on a regular basis.

Last Christmas we bought our eldest son a guitar of his own, as he too had said he’d like to learn, we’ve restrung mine and have started learning together. We meet with a tutor once a week. Paying a tutor has meant that I have someone monitoring my progress and holding me accountable, which means that I feel a greater need everyday to pick up that guitar and practice rather than skip it because I have work to complete, deadlines to meet, financials to update etc… Learning to play the guitar has not only allowed me to switch off from work, it clears my mind, after playing I feel refreshed and ready to engage in work activities with a new sense of enthusiasm.

You may have other interests that you’ve put off engaging in because you are too busy working. But I’d like to encourage you to take the plunge, indulge in a hobby, do something that is not about earning money, and for sheer enjoyment. My husband is passionate about gardening and farming even though he earns his income through teaching. His hobby is maintaining a micro farm here at home, with a vegie patch, chickens & ducks, he studies and experiments with different farming principles in order to get the best out of our little plot while providing our family with fresh & nutritious produce to enjoy. The point is that it is different to his everyday income-earning venture and allows him to escape, leave work behind and simply indulge.

Don’t dismiss the value of a hobby!

Close Up Interview with Designer Erica Young from Intuitive Automata

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.
For the last four years I have been living and working in Hong Kong as the Chief Design Officer of Intuitive Automata, a healthcare robotics startup. We are developing robots that help people manage their health, focusing our efforts on conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and elderly care. Our first coach, Autom™, will be out later this year. I'm also a part-time lecturer in the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and an active Airbnb host.

Who (or what) inspires you to do what you love?
The possibility of finding the ideal balance of visual language, technology, cost and impact in a design (be it a product, service, environment, or process) keeps me curious and motivated. It is extremely inspiring to see successful results of that pursuit.

Where do you get your inspiration from when you design?
First and foremost I gather inspiration from users. While they might not be able to articulate what they need and want, they can give you so many useful clues through interaction and observation.

Hello my name is Autom

What are the five words that people who know you would use to describe you?
When surveyed, creative, upbeat, optimistic, fun, and caring were some of the words my friends used to describe me.

Tell us about your very first job and what path have you taken since then?
My first industrial design job was in athletic and technical shoes, which taught me the importance of understanding manufacturing techniques and being precise. I gradually transitioned into the world of fashion, where I learned why a design needs to jump off the shelf and connect emotionally with a customer. Handling product development from concept to production over the years gave me an appreciation for process and introduced me to Asia. The opportunity to design Autom™ allowed me to apply these skills to a completely different industry, gain an understanding of user research and help build a company from scratch. As a part time lecturer, I now share what I've learned about the value of design research and how it can impact all aspects of a business.

Describe a typical day in at work?
There is really no such thing. In our company, like most startups, we wear many hats and things are constantly changing. Today I am charged with keeping our social media up to date. Last week I lead the creation of a marketing video. Before that I visited an electronics manufacturer across the border in Shenzhen. While most activities involve me glued to my laptop for long hours, the work itself varies a great deal.

As a Designer, what is your biggest frustration?
As a creative problem solver, one of my biggest frustrations is hearing the words can't, never, and won't. Those words don't foster a sense of collaboration and can derail the product development process.

Tell us about how you prioritise your work.
At a startup, it's always hard to balance the "important but not urgent" with the "urgent but not important" to ensure that you allocate enough time for the former and don't spend too much time on the latter. I find that being organized and clear about goals helps to put these issues into perspective. We put together a list of design priorities for projects both big and small and make sure everyone is clear about which details are most important to the success of the design.

Can you please tell us about how do you connect with other designers, and your customers (i.e. how do you network)?
For me, interacting with other designers is extremely important to keep my design skills sharpened, share best practices and learn about the latest trends. Luckily, Hong Kong is an extremely social city and it is easy to connect with other creative professionals locally. I try to support as many design conferences, workshops and events that are hosted here and stay active within the university community. In order to stay connected with my peers throughout the world, I use various forms of social media. It's hard to imagine life without it!

What advice can you offer other creative people who are just starting out and following their passions?
While I feel like I'm constantly learning and by no means an expert, I would say that any creative professional needs to understand their value and learn how to articulate their value to others effectively.

What is your proudest moment so far?
This is a tough one. One of my proudest moments recently was when our company won Technopreneur of the Year at the Wall Street Journal Asian Innovation Awards in October 2010. It was very gratifying to be recognized for the hard work we had put in to build the company and Autom™.

Who do you most want to meet and why?
My father passed away when I was almost 7 years old and it would be fascinating to have a conversation with him now as an adult.

What is the most important lesson in life that you have learned?
It's important to trust your gut. Only you know what is truly best for you.

What book are you reading right now, and do you have a book you would like to recommend?
Right now I am reading "Exploring Happiness: From Aristotle to Brain Science" but Sissela Bok. She does a fantastic job of sharing a wide range of opinions and theories on the topic in a very approachable way.
