Close Up with Launch Initiative Fashion

Tell us a little about Launch Initiative/ Fashion   and your role?
The Launch Initiative Company has three departments which primarily support new and established fashion designers. The first is a full service Design Studio, where we provide services such as pattern making, sampling and production.
The second department is a Sales Agency where we represent labels and get them into Retailers in Sydney. This agency is currently representing 4 fashion labels and 1 accessories label.
The third department is a our own in house label which we are currently developing. This is due to hit shelves in 2011.

What are the five words that people who know you would use to describe your company?
Innovative, experienced, supportive, friendly, boutique.

Tell us about Launchin Initiative/ Fashion and what you can help  fashion designer?
Launch Initiative is a support base, and can be entire design team. Before Launch Initiative started, there was very little suport for new and established fashion designers coming from the  industry.  We have since broken down these barriers to the industry. When a new designer comes into our office we usually sit down with them and go through the entire process, from what it takes, how much it costs, and how you are going to market/sell it. After this if that it is right we usually refer them onto Quantum Compass-ArtSHINE to write a business plan and business coaching. This is just one of the many things we do to help aspiring labels succeed.

What was the purpose on starting Launch Initiative/Fashion and how has the concept come about?
Whilst working for a large not for profit organisation the founder Martin found that there was very little support for new fashion designers in Australia. After working for two years on a concept which involved creating a fashion competition and producing clothing, we launched. Within the first year this concept has grown and changed form to what it is today.

The Design Studio started when Launch Initiative was in the process of releasing their first collection, we found out first hand just how hard it was to produce clothing in Australia.

What are the most common issues that relate to Fashion Designers who come to see you?
The most common issue that we see with new designers is that they have great creative skills but when it comes to actually running the business, they lack the business skills and industry connections required to kick start the label.

Tell us more about your service to the Fashion industry business?
Launch Initiative provides individual labels with their own in-house design team, from pattern makers to machinists, designers and production staff. We also provide certain designers access to our Sales Agency, who represent labels from around Australia.

Tell us about your process for working with clients?
We will have most of our clients in for a meeting.  Here we discuss what they are looking for, how we can help and will give them general advice on the design process.  From here we jump into the design process, whether it be pattern making, machining, marketing or production.  It varies greatly from every client.

Tell us about Fashion Competition you run?
Our competitions are currently on hiatus as we are re-working them to bring them back better and bigger

What advice can you offer to emerging  designers  who are just starting out?
Do your research, talk to buyers, go to markets, get as much information as possible. The second piece I would give them is to concentrate on your PR. Without PR, Buyers will not want to know or stock you.
